The popularity of nootropics is on the rise as clinical studies continue to show that nootropic supplements can improve memory recall, increase focus, and boost brain power.

Unfortunately, the growing nootropic trend has unleashed many over hyped brands making false claims and selling inferior, ineffective, and potentially dangerous products.

Nootropics have been all over the news lately, especially now that scientific researchers and silicon valley celebrities are confirming the major impact nootropics can have on our memory, cognitive health, and overall mental performance.

Despite the growing popularity of nootropics, many of us are still unclear about what exactly nootropics are, why we need nootropics to boost brain function and memory, and which nootropic supplements are the best to take.

With that in mind we've compiled years of research about nootropics and their effects on all areas of brain health. This comprehensive guide will teach you everything you need to know to make the most informed decision about your nootropic supplement needs.

WHY ARE NOOTROPICS IMPORTANT?

Everyone has experienced either some forgetfulness, lack of clarity, or inability to focus at some point in time. Memory loss is a common issue. And it only gets worse with age unless you do something about it.

What many people don't know is that certain nootropic brain supplements can actually improve memory recall and enhance clarity and focus.

Memory & Brain Heath Decline As You Age, But Nootropics Can Help

Supplement savvy “biohackers” (pardon the hokey term) have learned that nootropics can greatly improve memory and cognitive function. While the effects may not be like a real life “Limitless Pill” as seen in the popular sci-fi movie, the positive benefits are indeed real for many nootropic users.

5 Reasons You Should Take Nootropics

The proven effectiveness of nootropics has been well researched and documented. Here are some of the key benefits of taking nootropic supplements.

1. Improved Memory

You want to increase your memory capacity and remember things faster and more easily.

2. More Focus

You want to increase your focus and attentiveness when completing tasks, working on the job, and meeting deadlines.

3. Enhanced Clarity
You want greater mental clarity and calm, a state of inner peace and tranquility without anxiety.

4. Brain Repair

You want to repair your brain and create strong new brain cells to boost overall brain performance.

5. Disease Prevention

You have a family history of Alzheimer's, Dementia, or other neurological disorders and/or want to prevent brain deterioration.

If any of these benefits are important to you, it may be time to seek out a high quality nootropic brain supplement. Unfortunately, sometimes it's difficult to know where to start, and many consumers end up regretting their first nootropic purchase. Here are some things to keep in mind to help you make the right decision:

What To Avoid When Buying Nootropics

× Potentially Dangerous Substances
Many expensive nootropic brands exaggerate the effectiveness of their products and make outrageous claims about their ingredient formulations. Some brands even use experimental compounds and synthetic ingredients that haven't been extensively studied and may be unsafe for long term use. Among the ones to avoid are these three: DHEA, Huperzine A, and Noopept. After we published our report on the dangers of DHEA steroids being added to nootropics supplements, a heavily marketed nootropics brand quietly removed this harmful ingredient from their formula without explanation to the public. Some of these supposed “science backed” brands mislead consumers about the safety of their products and sell products that may put your health at risk.

× Prioritizing Cost Over Quality
We found that many lower-priced, generic nootropic supplements rely on ingredients of poor quality. Many aspiring biohackers have also discovered these pitfalls when attempting to mix their own nootropic stacks after following the advice of anonymous, unaccountable forum users. Also, our research shows that even the most expensive nootropic product on the market isn't as good or safe as buyers may think it is. The ingredient quality of supplements you ingest and the integrity of the companies who make them should be a high priority.

× Fillers, Binders, & Gelatin
Some companies use nasty chemicals like Magnesium Stearate and Silicon Dioxide. These synthetic ingredients have no health benefits and burden the organs since they must be processed by the body. Companies use these cheap additives because they increase machine productivity and lower manufacturing costs. Unfortunately, they may also cause short-term and long-term health issues, so stay away from brands that contain Magnesium Stearate and Silicon Dioxide.

WARNING: Beware of Amazon Reviews - Millions of Americans look to Amazon reviews before purchasing products, but most people don't realize that up to 60% of reviews have been paid for. Don't be fooled! Risking your health with reviews that are likely false is a dangerous game to play with your health when choosing an ingestible supplement.

What To Look For When Buying Nootropics

Clinically Proven, Quality Ingredients
There are many nootropic compounds backed by a long history of clinical studies and proven effectiveness, and a quality nootropic supplement will include ingredients such as Bacopa Monnieri, Rhodiola Rosea, Alpha GPC, N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, and L-Theanine.

Real Results, Not Hype
Too many fly-by-night nootropics brands are relying on pseudo-scientic marketing that targets the “new age” crowd and fans of science fiction films like Limitless and Lucy. A real “limitless pill” doesn't exist (yet!), so while nootropics do inspire hopes for consciousness ascension, stay grounded and focus on buying nootropics with proven results for cognitive enhancement.

Risk Free Money Back Guarantee
While some of the most expensive nootropics brands suffer from restrictive return policies, with diligent research you can find better nootropics companies that stand behind their products with money-back guarantees. This is a key component of determining whether or not you're buying from a company you can trust.

OPUS
By NOOESIS

In our search for the best nootropic brain supplements available today, NOOESIS OPUS won our #1 Best Nootropics 2018 award. There are several reasons this product stands out as the best nootropic product on the market.

Quality Ingredients: NOOESIS OPUS contains only the most effective nootropic compounds shown to achieve real results according to clinical trials and user feedback. These include Bacopa Monnieri, Rhodiola Rosea, Alpha GPC, N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, Phosphatidylserine, L-Theanine, and Vitamin B12. This is a notable contrast to some brands that stuff their capsules with every possible ingredient that might be linked to some minor cognitive benefit. NOOESIS sources only the highest quality all natural ingredients (including the superior form of B12: Methylcobalamin), and OPUS contains no junk fillers like Magnesium Stearate or Silicon Dioxide.

Real Results: While the subjective benefits of NOOESIS OPUS may vary, users report a greater sense of "calm focus" with "less mental fog" and an "increased positive outlook" while feeling "more motivated". While some so-called nootropics spike their capsules with 100mg caffeine to make you think you “feel” it working, NOOESIS OPUS doesn't contain caffeine or other stimulant drugs and instead relies on clinical dosages of essential nootropics that work synergistically to improve brain performance and health over time for increased positive benefits the longer you take it.

Safety You Can Trust: NOOESIS OPUS avoids dangerous and risky compounds like DHEA steroids, Noopept, and Huperzine A that some nootropics brands sneak into their supplements. NOOESIS OPUS won't cause caffeine crashes, short out your acetylcholine receptors, or keep you up at night. While some fly-by-night brands push the boundaries with experimental compounds, NOOESIS OPUS focuses on proven nootropics and safe science for a product that produces reliable results, not unwanted side-effects.

#2 Pick

PROS:
  • Noticeably Improves Focus & Attention
  • Beats All Other “Focus” Smart Pills besides OPUS.
CONS:
  • Not Recommended If You're Caffeine Sensitive
  • Not Recommended For Constant Daily Use
  • Gelatin Capsules
  • Contains Some Artificial Ingredients

Focus+
by Excelerol

The Focus+ supplement by Excelerol is one of our favorite “focus” nootropics, certainly the best focus pill we've found. As the name implies this product excels at boosting your focus when you need to tackle tasks that require a strong attention span and lots of concentration. Focus+ is our highly recommended alternative to products like Nootrobox Sprint and Onnit Alpha Brain. Why? Mainly because while nootropic effects are often subjective, Focus+ seems to have more consistent and reliable results.

As a helpful word of advice, this smart-pill is long lasting, so take it early in the day for best results. It does contain caffeine, but it's less likely to give you jitters than a double-shot latte at StarBucks if you have a higher body weight. Focus+ packs a powerful punch yet has a smooth come up. The main improvement that could be made to this product is splitting the “1 Daily” capsules into smaller pills so that users could take 1-3 for a customized amount of focus. The focus boost can be overwhelming for some people. Still, Focus+ easily beats the other nootropics that focus on attention span and short-term focus boosting. Also, to Excelerol, please remove the artificial ingredients and we'll probably grade it even higher.

#3 Pick

PROS:
  • Solid Beginner
    Nootropic Pill
  • Generally Safe
    For Daily Use
CONS:
  • Contains Low Quality Vitamin B-12
  • Gelatin Capsules

Neuro-Peak
by Zhou Nutrition

You may have seen Neuro-Peak by Zhou Nutrition if you've been shopping for nootropics on Amazon within the last few years. While we all know that Amazon reviews are less than reliable since companies buy positive reviews for their products and slam competing brands with 1-star reviews, there are some good products on Amazon.

Neuro-Peak is one of the leading brain supplements on Amazon for 2 reasons. Yes, one is that it's pretty cheap. But the other is that the formula is pretty good for a pre-made nootropic stack. Don't expect miraculous results, but it's a pretty decent product for nootropics beginners. It should be generally safe for daily use for most individuals. Our main concerns are the gelatin capsules (not vegan friendly for ethical consumers) and the fact that Neuro-Peak uses the lowest form of B-12 that when digested creates cyanide, a deadly poison in large doses. We'd recommend a few formula improvements and higher quality ingredients for better results, but again, it's a pretty solid nootropic supplement for beginners.

#4 Pick

PROS:
  • Contains Ginkgo Biloba
CONS:
  • May Cause Headaches
  • Not Recommended If You Have Bleeding Issues Or Plan To Have Surgery
  • Gelatin Capsules

BrainBooster
by NeuroEnhance

The BrainBooster supplement by NeuroEnhance came in strong in our best nootropics of 2017 roundup. This 100% natural supplement has a solid assortment of nootropics compounds that can increase memory retention, boost focus, and improve your mood. The big focus of BrainBooster is Ginkgo Biloba, a nootropic that is linked to improved cognitive function. While that herb's use for treatment of mental diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's remains unproven, this ingredient and this supplement as a whole can still be effective for those with realistic expectations.

Consider BrainBooster is a more effective (and less costly) alternative to trendy nootropics brands like Optimind, Nootroo, and MindLabPro. It can generally be effective for daily use, but discontinue use if you experience headaches, and avoid this product if you have blood circulation or bleeding issues.

#5 Pick

PROS:
  • Solid Beginner Nootropic Pill
CONS:
  • Solid, But Could Be More Effective
  • Gelatin Capsules

Enhance MHz
by LFI Labs

The Enhance MHz supplement from LFI Labs is another good example of a nootropics supplement done pretty well for the most part. Sure, this smaller brand isn't a hyped up trend machine and doesn't have the Silicon Valley fame or venture capital backed name recognition as heavily advertised nootropics like Nootrobox and Qualia, but LFI Labs has a solid nootropics stack that is on par with the big dogs while not risking your health with dangerous experimental ingredients and steroids like DHEA.

Enhance MHz cuts to the chase with a well-rounded formula that contains proven nootropics like Bacopa Monnieri, Phosphatidylserine, L-Glutamine, and more. It's not the most potent combination we've found, but it does seem to work for most people who've tried it.

#6 Pick

PROS:
  • Contains 3 effective ingredients
CONS:
  • Not Nearly As Effective As Competing Products
  • Contains Unwanted Fillers
  • Gelatin Capsules

Nootrobox Rise
by HVMN

HVMN (formerly Nootrobox) is one of the newer nootropics upstarts to come on the scene recently. After a failed Shark Tank pitch, HVMN (Nootrobox) co-founders Geoff Woo and Michael Brandt persisted and got their venture capital backed nootropics start-up up and running. So how are their brain pills? Well...

HVMN's aim is to simplify nootropics stacking, giving you a choice of a few supplements to take for different needs. The standout HVMN product is Nootrobox Rise, a nootropic you take daily generally first thing in the morning. It's kind of like a light version of NOOESIS OPUS with Rise containing 3 nootropic ingredients. The addition of cheap low-grade fillers and makes us question the quality of ingredients used, but compared to some other heavily marketed “trendy” nootropics supplements like NeuroHacker Collective Qualia, Nootroo, and Mind Lab Pro, HVMN's Nootrobox Rise is the clear winner among those competing products.

However, the big downside of Nootrobox Rise is that  while it's cheaper than some of competing products, you're getting a lower quality product that's simply less effective. HVMN's Nootrobox Rise is solid, but if you can get past the fancier packaging and hype driven marketing, you may be better off starting with a product like NOOESIS OPUS first.

#7 Pick

PROS:
  • Good results for some users
CONS:
  • Contains Huperzine A
  • Not As Effective As Other Products

Alpha Brain
by Onnit

Ah, yes, Onnit Alpha Brain. This was one of my favorite pre-made nootropics supplements for a while before I realized Huperzine A was linked to some uncomfortable side effects. Alpha Brain has a decent assortment of nootropic ingredients that are linked to boosted brain function, but it's best avoided for long-term use.

Onnit are one of the nootropics brands that actually bothered to put a bit of their budget into having some studies done to validate their nootropics. However, it's important to remember that just because a brand claims their product has passed “clinical trials”, it's not that same as the 10+ year safety testing process that FDA regulated pharmaceuticals must pass through. The supplement industry is unregulated, so companies generally say anything they want about their products until customers start reporting side effects or getting sick. But Alpha Brain is a solid product and deserves its mention among the best nootropics supplements on our list.

A good thing about Alpha Brain is that it does seem to generally work for many people who use it. The bad side is that it's quite expensive and Huperzine A may cause headaches and compromise your brain's ability to process acetylcholine in a normal, healthy way. More effective nootropics can be found for less money, but Alpha Brain is still pretty decent.

#8 Pick

PROS:
  • Widely available
CONS:
  • Not as effective as other products

Focus Factor
by Synergy

Focus Factor by Synergy is one of the nootropics supplements that's been around the longest. Focus Factor was also one of the first nootropics products to have sponsored 3rd party “clinical testing” to attempt to validate the product's effectiveness. Of course this isn't to be confused with FDA approval as none of Focus Factor's claims have been tested under FDA scrutiny, but this nootropics supplement does contain many ingredients that do contribute to your brain's overall health.

Part of why Focus Factor is still so popular is because it's pretty much everywhere. You can find it at just about any pharmacy near you. But again, while Focus Factor is arguably one of the more popular nootropics supplements around, this is largely due to its wide market penetration and availability in brick-and-mortar retail stores. Some of the better smart pills are only available online. While many products have been released that surpass Focus Factor's effectiveness, it's still worth taking if you already have a bottle in your possession and want to finish it up before trying another product that ranks higher on our list.

#9 Pick

PROS:
  • Works for some people
CONS:
  • Not as effective as it could be

Provasil
by Cognetix Labs

Provasil by Cognetix Labs is an all-natural brain support supplement that is intended to boost memory, intensify focus, and increase mental performance. It contains many of the research proven nootropic compounds that are linked to cognitive performance and is a pretty good nootropics supplement overall.

Provasil is primarily targeted at older adults and is a better choice of smart pill than many of the other brands not featured on our best nootropics list. However, there are more effective products that can be found for less cost, and so Provasil probably shouldn't be your first choice. Still, Provasil has a solid formulation of nootropics that include bacopa monnieri, L-Glutamine, & DHA to name a few, so it shouldn't be ruled out if one of the leading products on our list happens to be sold out or on backorder due to popular demand.

#10 Pick

PROS:
  • Works for some people
CONS:
  • Not recommended by Dr. Oz
  • Subscription Scams Reported

Optimind
by AlternaScript

Optimind is one of the nootropic supplements out there that's gotten some recognition although not always good. Optimind received a scathing review on Dr. Oz when their test subject showed worse cognitive performance after taking the product, but some people have experienced some luck with this smart pill.

Optimind features several key nootropic compounds like bacopa monnieri, huperzine A, and Phosphatidylserine among others, contributing to why it's a pretty okay smart pill that may help some users achieve a brain boost. While we can think of plenty of worse nootropics supplements to take, we can think of 9 better choices to make. If you try it watch, just watch out for their 10 capsule trial which is actually an automatic subscription scam. While Optimind is an okay product that deserves attention in our best nootropics roundup, we don't approve of these kinds of business practices.

Compared the other heavily marketed “trendy” nootropics supplements like NeuroHacker Collective Qualia, Nootroo, and Mind Lab Pro, HVMN's Nootrobox Rise is the clear winner among those competing products.

However, the big downside of Nootrobox Rise is that it comes at a steep cost and doesn't offer nearly as much value as some of the less expensive products higher on this list that provide even better results. HVMN's Nootrobox Rise is solid, but if you can get past the fancier packaging and hype driven marketing, you may be better off starting with a product like NOOESIS essence first.

PROS:
  • Simple, effective ingredients
CONS:
  • Very expensive

Alpha Brain
by Onnit

Ah, yes, Onnit Alpha Brain. This was one of my favorite pre-made nootropics supplements for a while. Alpha Brain has a decent assortment of nootropic ingredients that are linked to boosted brain function.

The supplement industry is unregulated, so companies generally say anything they want about their products until customers start getting sick or dying. But Alpha Brain is a solid product and deserves its mention among the best nootropics supplements on our list.

A good thing about Alpha Brain is that it does seem to generally work for many people who use it. The bad side is that it's quite expensive, and more effective nootropics can be found for less money.

PROS:
  • Good results for some users

PROS:
  • Widely available
CONS:
  • Not as effective as other products

Provasil
by Cognetix Labs

PROS:
  • Works for some people
CONS:
  • Not as effective as it could be

Optimind
by AlternaScript

PROS:
  • Works for some people
CONS:
  • Not recommended by Dr. Oz
  • Subscription Scams Reported
